1/31 NCAAB Game of the Day Preview

Texas Longhorns at Texas A&M Aggies
A battle of Top 20 Big 12 basketball powers tips off Monday when Texas A&M (17-3, 4-2) hosts conference-leading Texas (18-3, 6-0) at sold-out Reed Arena in College Station. Let’s see how they match up.

Despite ranking 101st in the nation in scoring, and 109th in the nation shooting from the field, the Aggies took a 17-2 record on the season into Nebraska this past Saturday.

Its only two losses this campaign were a nail-biter to Boston College and a 21-point blowout against Texas.

As expected, it was the offense that was the culprit in 57-48 loss to the Huskers at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Despite outrebounding Nebraska, 19-9, and being up 31-24 at halftime, A&M’s marshmallow attack went super soft in the second half, accounting for just 17 points.

The Aggies shot 24 percent from the field in the last 20 minutes and 39 percent for the game. They also

2011 NFL Pro Bowl

AFC vs. NFC, Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, HI
Sunday, January 30, 2011, 7pm EST
Line: NFC -1
Total: 63

The 2011 NFL Pro Bowl returns to Hawaii on Sunday when the AFC All-Stars square off against the top NFC players who are not injured or playing in the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowl was played in Miami a year ago at the same site of the Super Bowl, taking a break from 30 straight years in Honolulu. This will be the second consecutive year the game is played before the league’s championship game, with the NFC sitting as a slim 1-point favorite against the AFC.

The two teams with the best record in each conference during the regular season did not make it to the Super Bowl, so New England’s Bill Belichick is coaching the AFC squad while Atlanta’s Mike Smith is his NFC counterpart. Belichick would seem to have a major advantage here as a three-time Super Bowl champion and because many of the AFC players who are not current or former members of the Patriots will finally have an opportunity to play for him.

The AFC will also feature 23 of the 35 first-time Pro Bowlers, including Houston Texans running back Arian Foster and Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, who each led the NFL in yardage at their particular position. In addition, New England quarterback Tom Brady will not play for his coach and will be replaced by a player who started one year for Belichick – Kansas City’s Matt Cassel. San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will start in place of Brady.

Connecticut Huskies at Marquette Golden Eagles
Tues, Jan 25, 2011, 9pm EST, ESPN3
Line: Marquette -3.5
Total:

Marquette has played UConn tough recently, going 3-2 SU and ATS in the last five meetings. The Golden Eagles are 7-1 ATS in their last eight lined games overall with the lone loss coming at Notre Dame on Saturday (80-75). Like their fellow Cheeseheads the Green Bay Packers, they have even been close in all of their losses – six of seven have been decided by five points or less with the biggest margin coming in an 89-81 loss at Pittsburgh on January 8.

At home, Marquette has been extra tough with an 11-1 record and the only setback coming against in-state rival Wisconsin (69-64). The team’s three home wins against Big East opponents have been decided by an average of 19 points, capped by a 94-64 blowout of DePaul last Tuesday.

Connecticut has had the luxury of playing three of its last four games at home after playing three of four on the road, taking full advantage of that situation. The Huskies suffered both of their losses during that previous stretch on the road at Pittsburgh and Notre Dame before reeling off five straight wins. They are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a 72-61 win over Tennessee on Saturday.

UConn’s leading scorer Kemba Walker was held to a season-low 16 points against the Volunteers due mostly to poor shooting. Walker made just 6 of 18 shots from the field but dished out seven assists, his second-highest total of the season. Jeremy Lamb also scored 16 points while Roscoe Smith and Alex Oriakhi each added 12.

The Huskies have relied on strong defense during their current winning streak, holding opponents to 63.2 points per game on 38.3 percent shooting from the field. They will face a tough challenge here against a Marquette squad that is averaging 85.1 points per game at home with the OVER cashing in four of six lined games there. The UNDER is 4-0 in UConn’s last four games after four straight OVERS, and the OVER is 5-0 in the past five meetings between the teams.

The ninth-ranked Syracuse Orange (18-2, 5-2 Big East) will look to bounce back from consecutive losses to Top 10 opponents on Tuesday when they host the Seton Hall Pirates (8-12, 2-6) at the Carrier Dome. The Orange (-13.5) suffered their first loss of the season at #2 Pittsburgh (74-66) last Monday and followed that up with a disappointing setback against #8 Villanova (83-72) at the Dome on Saturday before a near-record crowd of 33,736 fans.

Syracuse will not have nearly that same amount of support against a Seton Hall team that hung tough in a 61-56 home loss back on January 8 despite playing without leading scorer Jeremy Hazell, who has since returned from a broken wrist and gunshot wound. Hazell has struggled with his shooting during a three-game losing streak that

JETS ENTER HEINZ FIELD TO BATTLE THE STEELERS

AFC Championship
New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers
Sun, Jan 23, 2011, 6:30pm EST, CBS
Line: Steelers -3.5
Total: 38.5

The Pittsburgh Steelers (13-4) know exactly what the New York Jets (13-5) are trying to accomplish as they meet in the AFC championship game on Sunday. The Steelers (-3.5) became the first team to ever win three playoff games on the road en route to their victory in Super Bowl XL, a feat that was duplicated by the New York Giants three years ago and could very well be repeated yet again by the Jets and/or Green Bay Packers this week.

The difference this time for New York and head coach Rex Ryan is that his team could knock out the three best quarterbacks of our generation in succession after disposing of Indy’s Peyton Manning and New England’s Tom Brady the past two weeks. Manning and Brady have a combined four Super Bowl wins and six appearances in the NFL’s biggest game between them while Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger is going for his third in each category.

NFC Championship Game in Review.....

NFC Championship
Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears
Sun, Jan 23, 2011, 3pm EST, FOX
Line: Packers -3.5
Total: 43

The Chicago Bears (12-5) and Green Bay Packers (12-6) will square off for the 182nd time in their historic rivalry on Sunday, but none of the previous meetings will take on more significance than this one for the NFC championship and a spot in Super Bowl XLV. The Packers (-3.5) were expected to compete with Minnesota for the NFC North title this year but now find themselves facing the surprising division champs in what will be their third straight road game in the playoffs.

Many have called the Bears lucky en route to their second NFC championship game appearance in five years, beginning with their season-opening 19-14 win over Detroit when Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson appeared to hand them their first loss. But Johnson’s apparent game-winning touchdown catch was denied, and good fortune has followed Chicago the rest of the way.

Big East NCAAB Preview: Georgetown @ Seton Hall + Free Pick

FREE PICKS FOR 1/18: KENTUCKY -4 and GEORGETOWN -3

Georgetown Hoyas at Seton Hall Pirates
Tue, Jan 18, 2011, 7pm EDT, ESPN
Line: Georgetown -3.5
Total: 138.5

The 23rd-ranked Georgetown Hoyas (13-5, 2-4 Big East) will play their second straight conference game on the road against the Seton Hall Pirates (8-10, 2-4), which might be a good thing considering they lost two in a row at home during a season-high three-game losing streak. The Hoyas (-3.5) ended their recent skid with a 74-65 victory at Rutgers on Saturday and hope to make it back-to-back wins before heading home for a matchup with St. John’s next Wednesday.

Like Georgetown, Seton Hall has also gotten off to a rough start in Big East play, dropping four of five since beating South Florida 64-55 in the league opener back on December 28. The only other conference win for the Pirates came against a DePaul team that has now dropped 18 straight Big East games. Leading scorer Jeremy Hazell returned to action though against the Blue Demons for the first time since suffering a broken wrist and getting shot in the armpit during an attempted robbery on Christmas Day, scoring a game-high 23 points.

7-1 NFL WEEKEND IN REVIEW

NY JETS:
Rex Ryan’s rowdy bunch is headed to its second straight AFC championship game after New York backed up its coach’s boasts with a 28-21 win Sunday over the New England Patriots—the team with the best record in the NFL. Mark Sanchez threw three touchdown passes and the Jets sacked Tom Brady five times in the most-hyped of the weekend’s four postseason games following a week of verbal potshots from both teams.

CHICAGO:
The Bears Jay Cutler ran for two touchdowns and threw for two as Chicago (12-5) pounded the Seahawks from the outset winning 35-24. The Bears’ built a 28-0 lead, but it was against the first division winner with a losing record, making it difficult to measure how good they are. The NFL will find out next week against the Packers (12-6), who have beaten third-seeded Philadelphia and top-seeded Atlanta on the road this month.

PITTSBURGH:
The Pittsburgh Steelers know better than to make vacation plans for the latter part of January, because they fully expect to be playing football through the end of the month. With their 31-24 comeback victory over Baltimore on Saturday, the Steelers earned a 15th trip to the AFC title game. The Steelers beat the heck out of the Ravens, too. After trailing 21-7 at halftime, Pittsburgh scored 17 straight points, then mounted a classic drive at the finish to move within a victory of a return trip to the Super Bowl.

GREEN BAY:
Looking very much at home, Rodgers threw three touchdown passes, ran for another score and led the Green Bay Packers to their second straight postseason road victory with a stunning 48-21 rout of the top-seeded Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night. The Packers (12-6) will have to win one more on the road to complete their improbable run from sixth seed to the Super Bowl, but nothing looks out of the question the way Rodgers is playing.

SATURDAY NFL PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Ravens @ Steelers and Packers @ Falcons

AFC Divisional Playoffs
Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers
Sat, Jan 15, 2011, 4:30pm EST, CBS
Line: Steelers -3
Total: 37

The Baltimore Ravens (13-4) have figured out a way to beat most of the great quarterbacks in the NFL lately, but they will try to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) with Ben Roethlisberger under center for the first time in seven tries on Saturday when they meet in the AFC divisional playoffs. Roethlisberger’s Steelers (-3) are 8-2 all-time against the Ravens, who have only beaten AFC North rival Pittsburgh recently when Charlie Batch or Dennis Dixon have started in his place.

Batch started the first meeting with Baltimore back in Week 4 due to Roethlisberger’s four-game suspension for breaking the NFL’s personal conduct policy, which resulted in a 17-14 loss. Roethlisberger was back for the rematch in Week 13 and pulled out a 13-10 victory for Pittsburgh despite suffering a broken nose early in the game. He benefit from the Steelers playing outstanding defense, led by All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu.

Polamalu made his case for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award by stripping Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco in the final minutes, which Roethlisberger converted into the game-winning touchdown on a 9-yard pass to running back Isaac Redman with 2:51 remaining. That enabled Pittsburgh to win for the sixth straight time in the series when Roethlisberger starts.

These divisional foes also battled it out in the AFC championship game two years ago with Polamalu returning a Flacco interception 40 yards for a game-clinching touchdown in a 23-14 victory. Polamalu has been nursing a sore Achilles’ tendon and sat out two of the team’s last three games in preparation for the playoffs.

Baltimore is perfectly capable of breaking through this time around though, bringing a 7-3 all-time postseason road record into the third meeting between the teams this year. The Ravens annihilated Kansas City 31-7 last Sunday behind a dominant defensive performance of their own. They had three sacks of Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel, who was also picked off three times and completed 9 of 18 passes for only 70 yards.

Offensively, Baltimore got a solid performance from Flacco against Kansas City and will likely need another one to get back to the AFC championship. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns and earned perhaps his signature victory in the first meeting at Pittsburgh earlier this season, beating his hometown team by throwing a game-winning 18-yard scoring strike to wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh with 32 seconds left.

The Steelers are 8-0 against the spread in their last eight January games, and the OVER is 9-1 in their past 10 home playoff games. The OVER is also 6-3-1 in the last 10 meetings, although the total has gone UNDER in the past two games between the teams.

NFC Divisional Playoffs
Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons
Sat, Jan 15, 2011, 8pm EST, FOX
Line: Falcons -2.5
Total: 44.5

The Atlanta Falcons (13-3) should be home underdogs against the Green Bay Packers (11-6) on Saturday in their NFC divisional playoff matchup according to most of the mainstream media. But oddsmakers still favor the Falcons (-2.5) in a rematch of an epic regular-season meeting between the teams from Week 12.

Atlanta won that game 20-17 when kicker Matt Bryant connected on a game-winning 47-yard field goal with 13 seconds left after Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers had tied the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jordy Nelson 43 seconds earlier. If the second meeting is anything like the first game, fans and bettors alike should be prepared for an instant classic.

Still, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is 20-2 all-time at the Georgia Dome and also beat the Packers 27-24 at Lambeau Field two years ago when he was a rookie. Ryan is coming off his best season (career-high 28 touchdowns and career-low nine interceptions) and made the Pro Bowl over Rodgers, who is just 2-14 during his career in games decided by four points or less.

As you can see, two of those games for Rodgers’ Packers came against Atlanta, so will the third time be the

1/12 NCAAB BIG EAST PREVIEW + FREE NBA PICK

FREE NBA PICK: CHICAGO -3.5
Pittsburgh Panthers at Georgetown Hoyas
Wed, Jan 12, 2011, 7pm EDT, ESPN
Current Line: Georgetown -3
Current Total: 141

The 22nd-ranked Georgetown Hoyas (12-4, 1-3 Big East) will try to bust an early-season conference slump when they host the fifth-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers (15-1, 3-0) on Wednesday. The Hoyas (-3) are off to their worst start in league play since the 2003-04 season and hope to hand the hot Panthers their first Big East loss of the year.

Georgetown is coming off back-to-back conference losses to St. John’s and West Virginia, giving a couple second-tier Big East teams even more confidence heading into the meat of the schedule. The latest setback for the Hoyas was a 65-59 home loss to the Mountaineers on Saturday as Austin Freeman continued to struggle.

Freeman has totaled just 17 points combined in the last two games, including 11 against West Virginia. Jason Clark was the only other Georgetown player to score in double figures with a team-high 16 points while nobody could stop

Oregon?? Auburn?? BCS Game Preview...

Two of the nation's most prolific offenses and two of the country's most explosive offensive players will square off for the BCS Championship on Jan. 10, when Auburn and Oregon look to cap their perfect seasons with a national title.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and Oregon running back LaMichael James weren't Heisman Trophy finalists by accident. Newton, who bested James and the other finalists for the Heisman, has passed for 2,589 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions, and he has added 1,409 rushing yards and 20 more scores. James has been just as effective on the ground, rushing for 1,682 yards and finding pay dirt 21 times.

Both teams are going to put up some points -- Oregon averaged 49.3 in the regular season, and Auburn wasn't far behind at 42.7 -- so the national title could come down to which defense can make a couple of stops.

AUBURN’S EDGE: The Tigers have the distinct advantage of knowing the best player on the field will have the ball in his hands on every snap when they have possession. No one has managed to stop Newton this season, and he has proven his ability to take what the defense gives and beat quality opponents with either his arm or his legs.

OREGON’S EDGE: For all the talk about the explosive offenses -- and the Ducks certainly qualify in that regard, leading the nation in scoring and ranking second in total offense -- Oregon's defense might be its greatest asset against Auburn. The Ducks are 14th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 18.4 points per game, but they haven't faced an offense as capable as Auburn's.

THE QUARTERBACKS: By now, you know all there is to know about Auburn's Cam Newton -- that his father worked with an agent to try to orchestrate a pay-for-play scheme, that he was deemed ineligible and immediately reinstated by the NCAA before the SEC title game, and that he had arguably one of the greatest seasons by an offensive player in college football history. Newton leads the nation in passing efficiency, ranks 15th in rushing and has accounted for 49 touchdowns.

All of that makes Oregon's Darron Thomas the forgotten quarterback in this game, a pretty incredible fact considering the season Thomas put together. The sophomore from Houston completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 2,518 yards with 28 touchdown and seven interceptions, and he rushed for 488 yards and five scores.

Sunday 1/9 Over or Under??

Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles (Total: 47.5)
It seems that everybody outside of the guys who really matter, the guys who set these odds that we’ve been salivating over all week, figures the Philadelphia Eagles are the real underdogs against the Green Bay Packers at home Sunday.

The books have Philly set as about a 3-point favorite but, right now, all the talk is that Green Bay might be the most dangerous team heading into the playoffs.

"Anybody can drag your name through the mud," Eagles safety Kurt Coleman told reporters. "I love the underdog role. Love it."  How much he’ll love it Sunday remains to be seen. This one’s going to be a real battle and with Vick banged up and weather likely to be a factor, I’m siding with defense here.

Pick: Under

Eagles Vs Packers Sunday NFC Wild Card Preview

NFC Wild Card Playoffs
Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles
Sun, Jan 9, 2011, 4:30pm EST, FOX
Line: Eagles -2.5
Total: 46

Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers admitted that he did not have much of a game plan then for Vick, which obviously will not be the case this time around. Teams like the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings have since provided Capers with enough of a blueprint to disrupt Vick and make him uncomfortable.

Philadelphia ended up dropping its last two games of the regular season – both at home – after clinching the NFC East, including a 24-14 shocker against the Vikings that cost the team a shot at the #2 seed. Minnesota’s defense gave Vick fits, picking him off once, forcing him to fumble twice and sacking him six times. Vick sustained a quad injury that kept him out of last week’s 14-13 loss to Dallas and has claimed he will be back to 100 percent for this playoff game.

Green Bay’s defense is even better, led by Pro Bowlers Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews. The Packers ranked second in the NFL in points allowed, giving up just 15 per game. They also own one of the league’s best secondaries featuring Woodson and Tramon Williams, who form arguably the best pair of cornerbacks. They helped hold opposing quarterbacks to just 194.2 passing yards per game and anchored a pass defense that ranked second with 24 interceptions.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers leads a one-dimensional offense for Green Bay that has missed Grant ever since he went down in the first game. Rodgers is still searching for his first career playoff win after nearly rallying his team back last year at Arizona in an eventual 51-45 overtime loss. He threw for a career-high 423 yards and four touchdowns with one interception and hopes to end a four-game road losing streak in the playoffs for the Pack.

The Eagles have covered seven of the last 10 meetings with Green Bay, going 6-4 straight-up in those games. The UNDER has cashed in seven of the last eight meetings.

Saturday AFC Wild Card Playoffs

AFC Wild Card Playoffs
New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts
Sat, Jan 8, 2011, 8pm EST, NBC
Current Line: Colts -2.5
Total: 44

Indianapolis played a major role in getting New York into the playoffs a year ago, resting starters in the second half of a 29-15 home loss in Week 16. The Colts were 14-0 at the time and had already clinched homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. That edge ended up playing a pivotal role in helping them win the second time around and advance to the Super Bowl.

The Jets had higher expectations off that loss and heading into this season, but New England proved to be a much tougher opponent down the stretch in preventing them from winning the AFC East. So they enter the postseason as a wild card team yet again, playing a difficult foe on the road that has enjoyed a lot of success against them in the past.

In fact, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning is 5-1 lifetime against defenses devised by New York head coach Rex Ryan. Maybe that is why Ryan said he is making this game “personal” in hopes of reversing his team’s fortunes and turning the tables on Manning and the Colts offense.

Manning threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns in the last meeting and has 12 touchdown passes with only two interceptions in six career games against Ryan, including time in Baltimore. He led Indianapolis to four straight wins to close out the regular season after the team’s postseason chances looked grim following a 38-35 home loss to Dallas in overtime.

The Jets were just 2-3 in their last five games to close out the campaign but pulled out an impressive 22-17 victory at Pittsburgh in the midst of that final stretch. Ryan’s team seems to be better than the Colts on paper, but trying to beat his old nemesis Manning will be the greatest challenge of his coaching career to date.

Insiders believe the best shot for New York is to come up with a similar offensive plan to last year’s playoff meeting, building an early lead through the air and then running the ball behind LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene. The Jets jumped out to an early 17-6 lead but did not follow through in the second half with the lead, totaling just 86 rushing yards on 29 carries. If second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez can overcome a lingering shoulder injury and learn from past experiences, he could lead his team to an upset and into the next round.

1/7 COTTON BOWL PREVIEW

Texas A&M Aggies vs Louisiana State Tigers
Friday, 1/7/2011, 8pm EDT, ESPN
Line: LSU -2
Total: 49

Louisiana State (10-2) and its two-quarterback offensive attack did not look anything like the Tigers teams that won a pair of National Championships in the last decade but that didn’t stop them from coming darn close again in 2010. With its usually strong defense and coach Les Miles’ bag of tricks, LSU was in contention for a BCS berth until the final weekend of the regular season when it fell to Arkansas and dropped out of the BCS top 5.

Texas A&M (9-3) had a shot at a BCS bowl until the last weekend as well, missing out on the Big 12 Championship game due to a tiebreaker. The Aggies finished with six straight wins in the Big 12, knocking off division winners Nebraska and Oklahoma. The turning point came when Ryan Tannehill stepped in at quarterback against Kansas. The team hasn’t lost since.

LSU’s Edge: Creativity. Few are better than Miles at keeping opposing defenses on their toes. The quarterback rotation is just part of the fun for the Tigers, who will use any number of trick plays at the end of games to get that one last score. Of course, ranking eighth in the nation in defense doesn’t hurt, either. It’s that unit that keeps them in games long enough for Miles to play the gambler.

Texas A&M’s Edge: Balance. The Aggies can beat you through the air with the combination of Tannehill to Jeff Fuller and pound away on the ground as well. Losing top running back Christine Michael to a broken leg midseason did not faze Texas A&M at all, as Cyrus Gray stepped up and finished the season with six straight 100-yard games, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

Middle Tenn. St. vs. Miami (Ohio) Bowl Preview

Miami OH RedHawks vs Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders
Thur, 1/6/11, 8PM EDT, ESPN
Point Spread: Mid. Tenn St -2
Total: 48

Miami-OH hired Michigan State assistant Don Treadwell as its next head coach on Dec. 31. Treadwell will be in attendance, but defensive backs coach Lance Guidry will coach the RedHawks against Middle Tennessee.

Middle Tennessee only has a 6-6 overall record, but the Blue Raiders won their last three games to become bowl eligible. MTSU has played a tougher schedule, with games against Minnesota, at Memphis and at Georgia Tech.

MIAMI'S EDGE: The strength for the RedHawks is their rushing defense, which allows only 121.38 yards per game and ranks 19th in the nation. Only two of their last eight opponents have rushed for more than 100 yards again Miami. Jerrell Wedge (88 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss) and Evan Harris (85 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss) lead the RedHawks.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE'S EDGE: The Blue Raiders have an outstanding running game that averages 178.50 yards per game (32nd in the nation) and score a respectable 27.5 points per game.

1/3 ORANGE BOWL PREVIEW

Stanford Cardinals vs. Virginia Tech Hokies
Monday, January 3, 2011, 8PM EST, ESPN
Betting Odds: Stanford Cardinal –3
Over/Under Total: 57.5

Two teams playing extremely good football collide in the Orange Bowl, as the Stanford Cardinal take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. Outside the National Championship game, you might be hard-pressed to find a team playing better than these two squads. In terms of peaking and momentum, this game should feature a barnburner between two of the better teams in the country. Both teams have showed tremendous character in soldiering back from setbacks.

In terms of bouncing back, Virginia Tech’s turnaround is unprecedented. After losing their first two to Boise State (no shame) and Division I-AA James Madison (a lot of shame), many stuck a fork in the Hokies. Not only did they bounce back, but they did so with flair. The Hokies have since won 11 straight and covered 10 of those games, underlying their ability and the fact that they were prematurely relegated to the scrap heap. In rampaging through the ACC in juggernaut fashion, the Hokies have redeemed themselves. Never able to get past #13 in the rankings after the two defeats, they are probably better than that number indicates.

The Cardinal didn’t have the unenviable season-rebuilding task that faced Virginia Tech, but have shown character in their own right. After jumping up on Oregon 21-3, you’d have to think some of those Stanford kids had a thought or two about a National Championship dancing around in their heads. As we now know, Oregon turned on the jets and outscored Stanford 48-10 the rest of the way to win big. Some suspected Stanford would be crestfallen by this setback and for a while they might have been. They came back to nip USC as 10-point favorites, then struggled to defeat lowly Washington State by 10, even though they were favored by 37.

1/2/11 NFL PREVIEW: Miami @ New England

Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots
Sunday, January 2, 2011, 1pm EST, CBS
Current Line: Patriots -4
Current Total: 43.5
Money Line: Pats -200 / Dolphins +170

New England as a team has not turned the ball over in winning each of its last seven games, averaging over 37 points since losing 34-14 at Cleveland in Week 9. The Pats should set the lerague record for least turnovers in a season set by Miami and the New York Giants (13) in 2008 with only nine so far.

Welker led the league in receptions last season but was not available when New England hosted Baltimore the following week, resulting in a 33-14 home loss to Baltimore in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Belichick does not want to make the same mistake twice considering this year’s team is much better and certainly capable of winning the Super Bowl for the fourth time.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is also playing arguably the best football of his entire career, throwing 24 touchdowns with no interceptions on his last 319 pass attempts over the last 10 games. Brady too knows what it’s like to go down with a season-ending knee injury, and you can bet his head coach will not risk playing the starters too long against the Dolphins.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins surprisingly own a 6-1 road record despite tying a franchise record for least home wins last week with a 34-27 loss to Detroit. Miami finished the season with a 1-7 mark at home after losing to a Lions team that had dropped 26 of 27 away from home.

There are expected to be a number of offseason changes for the Dolphins following another disappointing season, starting with quarterback Chad Henne and possibly head coach Tony Sparano. Henne has been a turnover machine (18 interceptions and two fumbles lost in 14 games) and failed to lead a talented offense ironically following controversial comments leading up to the NFL draft that Tim Tebow would not be able to play at this level.

Miami has enjoyed some success against New England despite losing five of the last seven meetings straight-up. The Dolphins are 4-3 against the spread in those games and have covered six of their seven road games this year with the UNDER going 6-1. The Patriots are 5-2 ATS during their seven-game winning streak and 3-3-1 ATS in going 7-0 at home this season.

1/2/11 NFL PREVIEW: Pittsburgh @ Cleveland

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns Sunday, January 2, 2011, 1pm EST, CBS
Line: Steelers -5.5
Total: 37
Money Line: Steelers -480 / Browns +380

The Pittsburgh Steelers (11-4) have some work to do in the final week of the regular season when they visit the Cleveland Browns (5-10) on Sunday with the AFC North title on the line. The Steelers (-5.5) must either win this game or have Baltimore lose at home to Cincinnati in order to capture the division along with a first-round bye as the #2 overall seed in the AFC.

If the Steelers lose to the Browns and the Ravens win, Pittsburgh will have to play the following week as the #6 seed without rest. That could be very critical to the team’s postseason success, especially considering All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu is still recovering from an Achilles’ injury.

Polamalu has missed the last two games, including a 27-3 home win against Carolina last Thursday night. The extra rest should benefit him, although a break here against Cleveland followed by another week off during the bye week would be ideal for a team that has aspirations of winning the Super Bowl for the third time in six years. Pittsburgh will not be taking Cleveland lightly after losing to the Browns last season on the road, 13-6. That was Cleveland’s only win of the season and completed a five-game losing streak for the Steelers that prevented them from making it to the postseason.

The Browns are a much better team this year with quality wins at New Orleans and at home against New England, which is the last loss the Patriots suffered. However, they have still lost 13 of the last 14 meetings with Pittsburgh despite last year’s victory, going 4-2 against the spread in the past four games between the teams.

Cleveland rookie quarterback Colt McCoy made his first NFL start at Pittsburgh in Week 6, throwing for 281 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a 28-10 loss. McCoy had tossed only one pick since then before throwing three in a 20-10 home loss to Baltimore last week. He figures to be the starting signal caller next year and was on the field in the team’s biggest wins of the year against the Saints and Pats.

The Steelers are one of three teams in the league with a 6-1 road record, going 4-3 ATS in those games. They have definitely tightened the screws defensively down the stretch, holding their last seven opponents to an average of less than nine points per game with the UNDER cashing six times.
