New Year's Day Bowl Preview: Rose Bowl, Outback Bowl, Fiesta Bowl

Rose Bowl Game
Texas Christian Horned Frogs vs. Wisconsin Badgers
Betting Odds: TCU -2.5/Wis +2.5
Over/Under Total: 58.5

This game will turn on how well Wisconsin’s power running game can get going against the Horned Frogs heralded defensive front seven.

Anchored by left tackle and Outland Trophy winner Gabe Carimi, the Badgers offensive line goes 6-foot-6 and 300-pounds across the board and is the biggest and strongest line the Frogs will have played against this season. With John Clay (936 yards, 5.3 ypc), Montee Ball (1,029 yards, 7.0 ypc) and James White (864 yards, 6.1 ypc) all rotating at running back to stay fresh, the Badgers continue to lean on you every play and just wear you down to the tune of 248 yards on the ground each game.

Senior quarterback Scott Tolzien isn’t flashy, but he led the nation in accuracy (74.3 comp. %) and is very good of taking advantage of openings in the passing game when teams brings safeties into the box to stop the run.

But TCU’s defense is the top-ranked defense in the country, limiting teams to just 215 yards of total offense and only 11.4 points per game so something will have to give. The Frogs only allowed 89.2 yards per game on the ground, so you can bet their game plan is to try and contain the Badgers and force Tolzien to have to win it in the air.

TCU has it’s own senior quarterback in Andy Dalton who led an attack that finished 10th in the country in yards (490.8 ypg), 9th in rushing (260.5 ypg) and 4th in points scored (43.3 ppg), but most of that was done against

THE MUSIC CITY BOWL:

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Tennessee Volunteers
Thur, 12/30/10, 6:40 PM EDT, ESPN
Point Spread: North Carolina -1
Total: 50

The Volunteers played their best football down the stretch. They beat Mississippi by 38 points and held a Kentucky team that averaged 33 points to two touchdowns in a 24-14 win. Their late-season surge was sparked by freshman quarterback Tyler Bray, who is surrounded by a talented group of receivers, including Denarius Moore and Gerald Jones. Also fueling the win streak, the defense didn’t allow more than 14 points in any of the last four games. Bray averaged 333 yards and three touchdowns per game in his four starts. Tennessee averaged nearly 250 yards passing a game (36th in the country) and that number likely would’ve been considerably higher had Bray started all year.

The Tar Heels, too, possess a potent passing attack led by T.J. Yates, yet their biggest edge may be their experience. This is nothing new for coach Butch Davis and the Heels, playing in their third straight bowl game. The 23-year old Yates is a battle-tested senior. North Carolina also has a slight edge in total defense, with some proven standouts at linebacker and in the secondary. North Carolina will be without running back Anthony Elzy, who was left behind after failing to meet the expectations of the program. Elzy rushed 296 yards and and two scores while catching 25 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns this season.

A four-year starter, Yates has racked up more than 9,100 passing yards in his career, including 3,184 yards and 18 touchdowns this season for North Carolina. Yates threw for 439 yards and three touchdowns against Florida State and 412 against LSU, one of the top defenses in the country. The Heels averaged 266 passing yards (25th).

The Tar Heels are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs SEC. The Volunteers are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games. The Under is 6-1 in Tar Heels' last seven games as a favorite and the Under is 5-1 in Volunteers' last six bowl games.

THE PINSTRIPE BOWL:
Kansas State Wildcats @ Syracuse Orange
Thur, 12/30/10, 3:40 PM EDT, ESPN
Point Spread: Syracuse -1
Total: 48

Kansas State and Syracuse both ended bowl droughts and will face off in the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 30 in Yankee Stadium. The Wildcats (7-5) are bowl eligible for the first time since 2006 while the Orange (7-5) are playing in their first bowl since 2004.

Kansas State has an experienced offensive line that was able to open holes for senior Daniel Thomas to run through most of the season. Thomas was the nation’s ninth-leading rusher with a 124.6-yard average per game and must be licking his chops watching tape of Syracuse allowing Boston College’s second-string rusher to

Baylor Bears at Illinois Fighting Illini
Wednesday, 12/29/10, 6PM EDT, ESPN
Point Spread: Baylor -1
Total: 63

The Bears will be meeting the Fighting Illini for just the second time in school history, upsetting then No. 14 Illinois, 34-19 in Champaign, Illinois, on September 25, 1976. Baylor will be led into this contest by sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III, who amassed nearly 4,000 yards of total offense and throwing for a school-record 3,195 passing yards. He ranked seven in the country by averaging 315.5 yards of total offense, helping the offense amass 478.5 total yards per game on the way to scoring 32.6 points per contest. Griffin also has the luxury of handing the ball off to senior Jay Finley, who ran for 1,155 yards to rank second on Baylor’s single-season rushing list.

Illinois earned an invitation to Wednesday’s contest by finishing 6-6 on the year, which was a three-win improvement from last season, tying for fourth place in the Big Ten with a 4-4 conference mark. The Fighting Illini will be making their fourth bowl appearance in 16 seasons. The team enters having faced the 14th-toughest schedule in the nation with its opponents having a combined record of 81-50 on the season. Illinois is 9-6 ATS as an underdog the past three years. The Fighting Illini finished the season strong on the offensive end, averaging 42.8 points and 435.8 total yards over the last six games. During the first six games this season, Illinois managed to score just 21.3 points per contest and 320 yards per game. The defense also got into the action, forcing 17 of its 25 turnovers in that period, converting those miscues into 69 points. During that same span, the Illini offense turned the ball over just five times.

Bettors will be interested in knowing that the Bears are 5-0 ATS as a favorite of 0.5 to 3.0 points, while the Fighting Illini are 1-5 ATS versus the Big 12.

12/28 NFL & NCAAF Preview + Free NBA Pick

(12/28 Free NBA Pick: BOSTON -6)
Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles
Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, 8pm EST, NBC
Line: Eagles -14.5
Total: 39.5

The Philadelphia Eagles (10-4) will go for their seventh win in eight games when they host the injury-plagued Minnesota Vikings (5-9) on Tuesday Night Football. The Eagles (-17) have been virtually perfect in their last seven games outside of a 31-26 loss at Chicago in Week 12, completing a sweep of the New York Giants with an unbelievable comeback victory last week.

Quarterback Michael Vick has thrown two touchdown passes or more in each of the last four games for Philly, including three through the air and one on the ground last week against the Giants. Vick passed for 242 yards and ran for 130 while wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was on the receiving end of two of his touchdown throws.

Joe Webb is expected to make his first career start after throwing two interceptions in relief last week, although Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazier has yet to rule Favre out even though he is doubtful to play. The Vikings are hoping to have running back Adrian Peterson back after he missed the loss to Chicago with a thigh bruise. Peterson is listed as questionable and will be replaced again by rookie Toby Gerhart if he does not play. Gerhart rushed for 77 yards on 16 carries against the Bears.

Minnesota has lost the last five meetings with Philadelphia both straight-up and against the spread with the total going UNDER in three of the past four games between the teams. The Vikings are just 2-7 ATS in their last nine games overall while the OVER has cashed in four straight for the Eagles along with nine of 10.

NCAAF INSIGHT BOWL PREVIEW:
Iowa Hawkeyes vs Missouri Tigers
Tues, 12/28/10, 10PM EDT, ESPN
Betting Line: Missouri -2.5
Total: 46.5

Iowa is 8-2 ATS as an underdog over the past three years and currently getting points on the college football lines page. The Hawkeyes finished the season bowl eligible for the 10th straight year and will be playing in their 25th bowl games. Iowa hold a 13-10-1 all-time bowl record and has recorded a 5-3 mark under Ferentz in postseason play. The program has played seven games in the state of Arizona, posting a 2-5 record, including a 34-27 loss versus the Arizona Wildcats on September 18. The Big Ten Conference is 2-4 in the Insight Bowl. Seven of Iowa’s 12 regular season opponents earned bowl invitations, while posting a 77-63 combined overall record this season.

Missouri will be facing Iowa for the first time since 1910 in a nationally televised contest in Tempe, Arizona on Tuesday night. The Tigers, ranked 12th in the last BCS standings, come into the game with a 10-2 overall record, including a 6-2 conference mark. The school will be playing in its sixth-consecutive bowl game, which has replaced the program’s record of four in a row. In all, the 2010 bowl game will mark Missouri’s 28th appearance in a bowl game, posting a 12-15 record in the process. The team was 7-5 ATS on the season.

The Tigers offense averaged 401.1 yards despite the dismissal of leading rusher Derrick Washington before the season. Missouri got at least 380 yards from three backs and a career-best 62.2 percent completion rate from second-year starter Blaine Gilbert. The team will be attempting to bounce back from last season’s 35-13 loss to Navy in the Texas Bowl. Missouri has done a lot of winning recently, tallying 40 wins since 2007, which ranks as 10th-most in the nation.

Bettors will be interested in the Tigers being 5-12 ATS versus teams with a winning record, while the Hawkeyes are 15-6 ATS in the same situation.

12/27 MNF NFL Preview: Falcons Vs Saints

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons
Mon, Dec 27, 2010, 8:30pm EST, ESPN
Line: Falcons -2.5
Total: 49

The Atlanta Falcons (12-2) return home for the first time in a month needing just one more victory there against the New Orleans Saints (10-4) to clinch the NFC South division title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Falcons (-2.5) are the only unbeaten team at home in the NFC this season with a 6-0 record and bring an eight-game winning streak into this matchup with the defending Super Bowl champions on Monday Night Football.

Atlanta was supposed to be tested away from home in its last three games but won and covered all three to put the team in prime position to play at home throughout the postseason. New Orleans had that edge last year and parlayed it into a trip to the Super Bowl by beating Minnesota 31-28 in the NFC Championship. Now the Saints are trying to play spoiler while putting themselves into position to nab the #4 seed in the playoffs, which would allow them to visit the NFC West division winner in the first round.

Defensively, the Saints will need to figure out a way to contain Turner after surrendering a season-high 208

Navy Midshipmen vs San Diego St Aztecs
Thur, 12/23/10, 8PM EDT, TV: ESPN
Point Spread: San Diego St -6
Total: 60.5

Navy enters the contest ranked No. 1 in the country in fewest penalty yards per game and fifth in rushing by gaining 288.9 yards a contest. Navy closed out the regular season with a 31-17 win over Army on December 11 despite miscues by starting quarterback Ricky Dobbs. The Midshipmen are undoubtedly led on offense by Dobbs, who has recorded 48 career rushing touchdowns, which is the fifth-most by a quarterback in NCAA history. He also needs 140 yards rushing to become just the seventh quarterback in college football history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in a season twice in his career. The Poinsettia Bowl marks Navy’s 17th bowl appearance, including a school-record eight straight. In its postseason history, the team has compiled a 7-8-1 bowl record, dropping the last three by a combined 14 points.

The Aztecs posted an 8-4 overall record and their four losses came by a total of 15 points. Among those four losses are three that occurred on the road, with all three opponents currently ranked 20th or higher by the Associated Press. San Diego State is 6-4 ATS on the season and 3-3 ATS when favored. The Aztecs

Point Spread: Boise State -17
Total: 58

The Broncos are 6-4 in bowl games, but have registered a 2-4 record in the last six due to one, three, four and six point losses. Boise State will also be playing its third straight postseason game against a team from the Mountain West Conference, splitting the last two years with the TCU Horned Frogs. Defensively, the team has allowed just 27 red zone opportunities in 2010, with the opponents scoring just 15 times. The 56 percent success rate for opponents is the nation’s second-best mark. In fact, Boise was the only team in the country to finish the regular season ranked in the top five in both total offense and total defense. The Broncos also ranked second-nationally in scoring offense (46.67) and fourth in scoring defense (13.58).

Utah has compiled an impressive 12-3 record in bowl games and currently boasts the nation’s longest active bowl win streak at night games. The streak is actually the second-longest in the history of college football,

Chicago has yet to lose a divisional game and beat Minnesota 27-14 in Week 10 during a five-game winning streak that ended with a 36-7 home loss to New England last week. The Bears were supposed to thrive in the cold-weather conditions against the Patriots but struggled mightily in all facets of the game. Fortunately for them, they will not have to face Tom Brady but instead get to prepare for a third-string quarterback for the third time in five games.

TODAYS FREE PICK: 5* ATLANTA -6
Atlanta Falcons at Seattle Seahawks
Sunday, Dec 19, 2010, 4pm EST, TV: FOX
Line: Falcons -6
Total: 45

Atlanta has been perfect at home this season with a 6-0 record at the Georgia Dome and currently owns the best record in the NFC, which will secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if the same scenario hold true after the final three weeks. The Falcons already beat New Orleans on the road earlier this season and does not want to overlook Seattle in this spot.

The Seahawks have been humbled following a 4-2 start, dropping five of their last seven games. Regardless, they still have an excellent opportunity to make the playoffs as current co-leaders of the NFC West. They are coming off a 40-21 loss at San Francisco last week, but the 49ers followed that up by losing 34-7 at San Diego on Thursday night.

Seattle’s main problem has been defense, as opponents are averaging 32.5 points in the last four games. The OVER has cashed in the team’s last six games, and division leaders Kansas City and the New York Giants have combined for 83 points in recent trips to Quest Field. Wide receiver Mike Williams hopes to return for the Seahawks after missing the last three games with foot and ankle injuries. Williams leads the team with 52 catches for 654 yards and gives quarterback Matt Hasselbeck a huge weapon to target downfield.

Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan knows what having a valuable receiver can do, as Roddy White leads the NFL with 99 catches and 1,219 yards. White could come up big against a Seattle secondary that is ranked 30th in the league, giving up 266 yards per game through the air. Ryan has also had a lot of help from running back Michael Turner, who has rushed for 708 yards and 10 touchdowns in the last seven games. Ryan has averaged 247.4 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions over that same period.

The Falcons are 6-1 against the spread during their winning streak and have seen the OVER go 5-1-1 during that stretch. However, they have lost four of the last five meetings with Seattle dating back to 2000.

=============================================

Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys
Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, 1pm EST, TV: FOX
Line: Cowboys -6
Total: 46

Dallas is 5-0 against the spread since Jason Garrett took over as head coach with the total going OVER in every game during that stretch. The OVER is a remarkable 10-0 since the team’s bye week, although the first five games of that run were due more to poor defense than good offense. The Cowboys surrendered 35.8 points per game in those first five games after the bye while they have averaged 32 in the last five since then.

College Bowl Previews for 12/18

New Mexico Bowl Preview:
BYU Cougars vs UTEP Miners
Saturday, 12/18/10, 2PM EDT, TV: ESPN
Betting Line: BYU -11.5
Total: 50.5

The Cougars will be led onto the field by quarterback Jake Heaps, who will become the first freshman to start under center for the school in a bowl game. He holds school freshman records in passing yards, passing attempts, passing completions, games started and games won. BYU will be meeting UTEP for the first time in 12 years, but has won 20 of the last 22 meetings in the series. The program is also a dominating 26-6 against current Conference-USA teams, but has an 0-2 mark in bowl games against such opponents.

The Miners are led by senior quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, who holds the school record for passing yards (12,194) and passing touchdowns (94). He struggled mightily down the stretch in averaging just 155.6 yards in the last six games. UTEP has posted an all-time record of 6-16 at today’s venue, with all of those games against southwest rival New Mexico. The program has also gone 5-3 versus Mountain West Conference competition since the WAC split following the 1998 season.

Bettors will be interested in the Miners being 4-1 ATS versus the WAC, while the Cougars are 4-0 ATS in their last four games.

Humanitarian Bowl Preview:
Fresno St Bulldogs vs N. Illinois Huskies
Saturday, 12/18/10, 5PM EDT, TV: ESPN
Betting Line: N. Illinois -1.5
Total: 59

The Bulldogs will be taking on a MAC opponent for the first time since 2008 when they earned a 55-54 double overtime win at Toledo. Fresno State is 11-4 all-time against MAC competition. This will be the program’s 23rd bowl appearance and it currently has an 11-11 all-time record. Quarterback Ryan Colburn will be a key player in the team’s effort of moving over the .500 mark in bowl games, as he had 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions in the regular season. It’s important to note that the two-year starter struggled in the squad’s losses this season, especially in throwing two interceptions at Boise State and three against Hawaii.

Northern Illinois is coming into this contest off its first 10-win regular season since 2003 and is only the fourth Huskie team ever to reach that mark. The Huskies 10-win season is even more impressive when considering it was the only team in the country to hit that mark while playing only five home games. Northern Illinois broke single season records for points (492), total offensive yards (5,797) and offensive touchdowns (60). Offensively, the team ranked seventh in the country and led the MAC in rushing offense in averaging 264.8 yards per game.

Bettors will be interested in knowing that the Huskies are 2-9 ATS versus a team with a winning record, while the Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in bowl games as an underdog.
===========================================================

New Orleans Bowl Preview:
Ohio Bobcats vs Troy Trojans
Saturday, 12/18/10, 9PM EDT, TV: ESPN
Betting Line: Troy -1.5
Total: 57.5

The Bobcats have made four previous bowl appearances, but have yet to break through in the win column, including a 21-17 defeat to Marshall in last year’s Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The team’s success can be attributed to its success in the red zone, ranking fourth in touchdown percentage inside the 20 yard line, while scoring on 88 percent of its trips, which checks in at No. 17 in the country in that category. Ohio is 8-5 ATS when the line is +3 to -3 this season. The Bobcats will need to ride quarterback Boo Jackson in order to break into the winners column in bowl games. Jackson will need to stay away from turning the ball over, as he threw 16 interceptions in just 224 passing attempts this season.

Troy will be making its third trip to the New Orleans Bowl and completed the regular season with a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship.
The Trojans have posted a 14-10 all-time record in games played in December and the defense will need to be much-improved in order to gain another victory. Troy’s stop unit has allowed 372 total points thus far during the 2010 season, which is just 15 points less than the school-record 387 points it allowed in 2009. A major part of the defense’s problem has been lack of consistency, with only three players starting in all 12 games this season. The defense must aim for allowing less than 30 points in this contest, considering Ohio is 8-0 when going over that number and 0-4 when falling short.

Bettors will be interested in the Bobcats being 7-1 ATS as an underdog, while the Trojans are 21-10-1 ATS following a SU win.

Friday 12/17 NBA Matchup: Heat @ Knicks

Miami Heat at New York Knicks
Friday, 12/17/10, 7PM EDT, TV: ESPN
Point Spread: Miami -5.5
Total: 209.5

Last night was the first time in 8 days our free pick did not win. It was a 1 point push in a great game that San Antonio beat Denver 113-112.

Tonight we'll take the Knicks +5.5

The Heat have recorded nine wins so far in the month of December, already surpassing last year’s total of seven victories. Miami has also enjoyed dominance on the boards over the past six games by out-rebounding opponents by a 278-218 margin. The two teams will be meeting for the first of four matchups on Friday night and Miami swept the season series 3-0 last year. In fact, the Heat have won the last five meetings between the two clubs, but are still 37-53 all-time versus the Knicks in the regular season, including a 15-31 mark in games played in New York.

New York had its eight-game winning streak snapped in dramatic fashion by dropping a 118-116 home game to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. The Knicks may have lost the game, but many NBA experts believe the club has gained the respect of the league and Boston in particular after the losing effort. “I guarantee you that Boston respects us,” said forward Amare Stoudemire. “We’re no slouches. We are going to play every single night until the horn goes off.” He finished with 39 points and 10 rebounds, while remaining high on everyone’s list for league MVP. New york is 5-1 ATS as an underdog of 5.0 to 10.5 points.

The Knicks will be finishing up a three-game homestand when they host the Heat and will be playing the front-end of the club’s ninth back-to-back set. New York is 4-4 in the first game with four sweeps. Expect Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler to play a major part in tonight’s outcome, as they averaged 22.3 and 18 points respectively in the two meetings against Miami last season. Defensively, the squad will need to keep close watch on Heat guard Dwyane Wade, who averaged 29.3 points in the series last year.

Bettors will be interested in knowing that the Heat are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings, while the Knicks are 15-5-1 ATS as an underdog.

Tonight we'll take the Knicks +5.5

Thursday 12/16 NBA Matchup: Spurs @ Nuggets

Thursday, 12/16/10, 10:30 PM EDT, TV: TNT
Point Spread: San Antonio -1
Total: 214.5

We like the Spurs -1 tonight, and here's why:

The Spurs are set to return home for three more games following tonight’s contest and will likely come out with energy on the road after dropping its last contest away from San Antonio, a 90-85 defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers. Offensively, the team’s ball movement has been paramount to recording the best start through 24 games in franchise history, dishing out more assists than opponents in 20 games this season. Point guard Tony Parker is enjoying a solid season and ranks 14th in the league in averaging 7.0 assists per game, while scoring 16.9 points a night. As a team, the Spurs rank first in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.414) and eight in field goal percentage (.469).

Denver is on the verge of capturing its first 11-game winning streak at home since 2005 and is coming off an impressive 111-94 win over the Orlando Magic at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets were led by the 35 points and 11 rebounds of star forward Carmelo Anthony, who is trying to deflect rampant trade rumors of him heading to New York. “I’ve got a game here Thursday night against San Antonio and that’s what I’m focused on,” Anthony stated. “All that other stuff, I’m not even paying attention to right now.” The club is a dominating force at home and leads the league with 45 home wins since the beginning of the 2009-10 campaign. Denver is 9-14 ATS on the season and 2-0 ATS as a home underdog of three points or less.

The Nuggets have lost two straight to the Spurs in Denver, which represents the only active multi-game home losing streak for the franchise. In fact, San Antonio became the first Denver Western Conference opponent since the 2006-07 season to win multiple games in Denver. One key injury may prove critical in the team’s chances of ending its current losing streak to San Antonio, as Ty Lawson is expected to start at point guard for the Nuggets in place of Chauncey Billups, who missed Tuesday’s win with a wrist injury.

Bettors will be interested in the Spurs 3-0-1 ATS mark as a road favorite of 0.5 to 4.5 points, while the Nuggets are 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 games.

We like the Spurs -1 tonight
